FireWatch
Where Is Smoke, There Is Also Fire
"Fumus ignem", smoke indicates fire, philosophized the Roman Marcus Tillius Cicero more than 2000 years ago. Over the centuries, people always watched for smoke to recognize the fire as quickly as possible. For our ancestors a fire inside the town walls was one of the most dangerous events. Today the fire service is quick in getting onto the spot and mostly they are extinguishing the fire while it is still at its early stages – in the town.
The situation is quite contrary off in uninhabited areas: in the forests, woods or bushes. Still too often, the fire is only recognized when it is already blazing out of control. Threatening and destroying fauna, flora and humans. The forest however is not just wood, it is a valuable ecosystem, a cultural heritage, with economic value. It is worthwhile to save it. However, 300.000 to 500.000 square kilometres of forest burn every year which is producing more carbon dioxide than the global car traffic!
Watching out for smoke is still the most reliable way to recognize a fire while it is in its early stages. You can deploy people to watch the forest but this is personnel intensive and perhaps an erroneous option.
Over the hours, days and months the attention of the fire watchers is distracted from the forest and the fire may be detected to late.To avoid such a human related delay of detection we developed an effective, automatic early fire warning system.
FireWatch is a system which uses state- of-the-art technology to watch out for smoke 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
